Meet the Founder: An Original Night with Mel McGraw, Founder of Monk Provisions.
In 2014 Melanie McGraw left her consulting firm (working with up-and-comers in the cannabis industry) to launch her own innovative concept in the same category. The result, Monk Provisions, has been on the fast track to success ever since, raising just under $1 million to date to bring impeccably conceived and crafted drinking botanicals to the market. With Monk, McGraw and Co-Founder Aaron Burke are bringing a new standard of integrity and excellence to consumers. Their products are made with organic and sustainably sourced super herbs, terpenes and fresh pressed juices and infused with low doses of ethically sourced California grown cannabis.
McGraw’s personal and professional trajectory is laced with incredible tales of originality, creativity and scrappy thinking. Come sip and sample some of Monk’s exquisite elixirs (flavors include grapefruit/cinnamon-bark/cayenne, ginger/maple/apple-shrub, and rosemary, orange-peel/lemon), and learn at the foot of a maestro whose vision, business savvy and heart are sky-rocketing Monk to trailblazing success.
MELANIE (MEL) McGRAW is an award-winning filmmaker, instructional design and training consultant, and most recently, Co-Founder/President of MONK PROVISIONS, an LA-based company that is completely redefining the cannabis experience.
Melanie grew up in Hyattsville, MD the second oldest (and oldest girl) of 10 children in a stalwart Mormon family. As an undergraduate English major at Brigham Young University, she put herself through college working in restaurants, where her intense work ethic, commitment to serving others, and a keen ability to multi-task led to management positions at a young age. One of the restaurants she landed at was Brackman Bros. Bagels in Salt Lake City, UT. As the highest-performing General Manager in behavioral and bottom-line results, she was promoted to Director of Training and shortly thereafter was asked to define and develop the training curriculum for what would soon become Einstein Bros. Bagels. She was 24 years old.
Mel’s experience since has been rooted in operations and training with high-growth startups, helping Einstein Bros. go from 0 to 500 stores in a two-year period. She has led companies - in a number of industries - in the design, development, execution, and management of operations and training strategies. Leading the instructional design process for Old Navy’s Training & Development team, Mel drove the redesign of their management training program, producing successful, innovative, performance-based programs in a collaborative environment. Mel has consulted with Dean & Deluca®, Robeks®, Catalina Restaurant Group, Inc., Panera Bread®, Panda Express®, The Walt Disney Company®, and Wendy’s®.
Mel eventually merged her professional skills and experience with her passion for filmmaking, becoming an award-winning writer-director whose films have screened worldwide. In 2007 she earned a MFA from USC’s prestigious School of Cinematic Arts where she received multiple awards and scholarships. In 2008, her short film PITSTOP won a Student Academy Award® and BAFTA/LA Best Student Film Award. Her feature script, NUMB FOR JESUS, was selected by the Film Independent Screenwriters Lab and placed in the Academy Nicholl Fellowship and Austin Screenplay Competitions.
While simultaneously working on film projects, Melanie began her tenure in the cannabis industry in 2008 by leading the charge on systematizing, documenting and expanding best practices for Harborside Health Center, the largest grossing dispensary in the world. In 2011, she joined 4Front Advisors, a highly esteemed management consulting team within the marijuana industry, where, in collaboration with Aaron Burke, co-founder of MONK PROVISIONS, she developed the most comprehensive set of operating policies and procedures available in the cannabis industry today. In 2014, after seeing so many issues with industry operators that negatively impacted patients and customers, Mel and Aaron decided to more directly impact the industry with a solid set of customer-focused values as a foundation. In 2015, MONK PROVISIONS was born.
Mel keeps her film projects close to her heart while growing MONK PROVISIONS, and values the insight that each provides the other. She lives in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles with her wife, Erin, two-year-old daughter Olive, and their ridiculously cute dog Truman who can occasionally be spotted on the MONK Instragram page.
